John Adam’s Antony and Cleopatra

I am looking forward to seeing the world premiere of John Adam’s new opera at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco next month. If you haven’t been, the opera house is truly an amazing building. It was built in the 1930’s to commemorate the sacrifice of the soldiers during WWI. It was designed by Arthur Brown Jr., who was also the architect behind the magnanimous San Francisco City Hall and Pasadena City Hall as well. I’ve been thinking about architecture a lot lately as I have read through a biography of Fredrick Law Olmstead. An underrated approach to studying history is picking some other discipline, in this landscape architecture, and tracking history through that specific lens.
